Teaching Philosophy
Teaching, learning, and analyzing the results of engaging in these processes have been an intricate part of all my life’s endeavors. As a young boy growing up in rural north Mississippi, I found myself developing an undeniable passion for learning. My spare time was spent reading dictionaries and encyclopedias to gain knowledge. Quenching my desire for knowledge, I always sought to teach others things I learned from my studies. As I got older I began to fully understand the power of obtaining an education. Herbert Spencer wrote, “The great aim of education is not knowledge, but action. Therefore, once I became a college instructor I was aware that my role as a teacher culminated into helping my students reach their highest level of academic achievement, inspiring them to learn, and be change agents in their communities. I approach all that I do in and out of the classroom based on this statement.
Moreover, I utilize innovative technological approaches in my instruction, encourage students to apply the skills learned in my courses in their respective fields of study, and I seek to inspire my students to use the knowledge they attain to bring awareness to issues impacting humanity and improving the human condition.

The Seward Plantation Project
During the Spring of 2021 I began discussions with Wiley and Cynthia George, the owners of the Seward Plantation located in Independence, TX, regarding entering an educational partnership with Prairie View A&M University. The partnership entailed using the history of the Seward Plantation to bring light to antebellum life in Texas, the experiences of enslaved people, and the environments that they lived in during their enslavement. To date, due to the Wiley Family's generosity, we are engaged in a student-centered research project which entails using audio visual platforms, digital tools, and the creation of an artistic exhibition from plantation artifacts to tell the property's story. The video below provides a brief history of the plantation.
