Student Engagement and Service

Out of class Engagement

Student engagement is an intricate part of my research and instructional efforts. In particular, I expose history majors to primary research, archival studies, and public history in my research courses through working with Prairie View A & M University's Special Collections and Archives Department. History majors and minors work with the archive helps them gain tangible skills which they can utilize in public and private sector careers.

Service-Learning

In addition, student participants provide important service by contributing to making PVAMU's history available to the public and by helping to preserve the university's history. These service-learning activities are a cornerstone for students to build their professional careers around.

Archival Studies and Historic Preservation

I introduce students to archival studies and historic preservation through my course instruction and provide them with hands-on experiences in the archive.

Oral History

Also, I introduce students to the best practices of conducting oral histories in accordance with Oral History Association guidelines. In addition, students are provided with lectures and workshops from the leading oral historians in the State of Texas. Please see the video below of Adrienne Cain, Assistant Director of the Baylor University Institute of Oral History.
